This memo is a response by Detective Ward to ACP Nicolson's request for the names of any Chinese people suspected of assisting the Kelly Gang. There was a widespread belief that the Chinese were active Kelly sympathisers.

[Alleged assistance to outlaws by Chinese] North Eastern District I have the honour to report for the information of the Assistant Commissioner with reference to the attached, I have made careful inquiries and I can only find two Chinamen who are likely to assist the outlaws viz. Ah ping and Ah soon both reside on the upper King above Lewis Station. There are several Chinese in Sebastapol who are very intimate with Joe Byrns mother, but I cannot say they would aid or assist them. Ah Yips is going to the upper King in the middle of this week and he has promised to make further inquiries for me. M. E. Ward [End of page 1] |
